What is the Electrical Engineering Board Exam?

The Registered Electrical Engineer (REE) Licensure Examination is the PRC board exam that BSEE graduates must pass to become registered electrical engineers. It is given by the Board of Electrical Engineering under RA 7920, the New Electrical Engineering Law, usually twice a year. It has three weighted subject groups taken over two days.

The exam format

Licensing bodyPRC, Board of Electrical Engineering
LawRA 7920 (New Electrical Engineering Law, 1995)
Subjects and weightsMathematics 25%; Engineering Sciences and Allied Subjects 30%; Electrical Engineering Professional Subjects 45% (RA 7920, Sec. 19)
ScheduleTwo days; the April 2026 sitting was on 21 and 22 April. It is commonly reported that Mathematics and Engineering Sciences come on day one and the Professional Subjects on day two.
To passA general weighted average of 70%, with no grade below 50% in any group (Sec. 19). A candidate may retake only the groups graded below 50%, and passes by averaging 70% in them (Sec. 21).
Who may take itA Filipino citizen at least 21 years old, of good reputation with high moral values, with no final conviction for an offence involving moral turpitude, and a BSEE degree from a recognised school (RA 7920, Sec. 17)
Recent resultsSeptember 2026: 3,399 examinees, 1,676 successful (49.31%). April 2026: 6,556 examinees, 3,769 successful (57.49%). PRC results as reported.

What the exam covers

  • Mathematics: algebra, trigonometry, analytic geometry, differential and integral calculus, differential equations, complex numbers, probability and statistics, matrices, power series, Fourier analysis and Laplace transforms.
  • Engineering sciences: chemistry, physics, computer fundamentals, engineering materials, mechanics, fluid mechanics, strength of materials, thermodynamics, engineering economics and management.
  • Law and code: RA 7920, contracts and specifications, the code of professional ethics and the Philippine Electrical Code Parts 1 and 2, all within the Engineering Sciences group.
  • Circuits and electronics: DC and AC circuits, network theorems, resonance, transients, three-phase systems, diodes, transistors, op-amps and digital logic.
  • Machines: transformers, induction and synchronous machines, and DC generators and motors.
  • Power systems and power plants: per-unit calculations, fault levels, power factor correction, transmission and distribution, and hydro and steam plants.
  • Protection, instrumentation and illumination: relays, instrument transformers, meter extension, and the inverse square, cosine and lumen methods.

Free official resources, and what we add

The PRC publishes exam schedules and results, and RA 7920 is free on lawphil.net. The Philippine Electrical Code is published by the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers. There is no official question bank. We add 114 original practice problems written and checked against RA 7920, its Section 19 subject list and the PEC, with every calculation worked out step by step.

How to prepare

  1. Start with the free 5-question sample to see the style.
  2. Give the Professional Subjects the most time: they carry 45% of the rating.
  3. Do not neglect Mathematics. A grade below 50% in any group means you have not passed, whatever your average.
  4. Learn the core formulas until they are automatic: impedance, three-phase power, slip, transformer efficiency, per-unit and the lumen method.
  5. Read RA 7920 and the PEC numbers that come up often: 125% for continuous loads and motor conductors, 250% for inverse time breakers, 40% conduit fill.
  6. Take timed mock exams in the final weeks and review the working of every miss.

What is the polar form of the complex number 3 + j4?
  1. 5∠36.87°
  2. 5∠53.13°
  3. 7∠53.13°
  4. 25∠53.13°

Answer: B, 5∠53.13°. Magnitude = √(3² + 4²) = √25 = 5. Angle = tan⁻¹(4/3) = 53.13°. 36.87° is tan⁻¹(3/4), which swaps the real and imaginary parts; 25 forgets the square root and 7 adds 3 + 4. Source: RA 7920, Sec. 19(b)(1) (REE Mathematics coverage); complex numbers.

₱100,000 is deposited at 8% interest compounded annually. What is it worth after 5 years?
  1. About ₱146,933
  2. ₱140,000
  3. About ₱158,687
  4. About ₱136,049

Answer: A, About ₱146,933. F = P(1 + i)ⁿ = 100,000 × 1.08⁵ = 100,000 × 1.469328 = ₱146,933. ₱140,000 is simple interest (100,000 × 0.08 × 5 added), ₱158,687 is 6 years and ₱136,049 is 4 years. Source: RA 7920, Sec. 19(b)(2) (Engineering sciences and allied subjects); engineering economics, compound interest.

Under RA 7920, what are the weights of Mathematics, Engineering Sciences and Allied Subjects, and Electrical Engineering Professional Subjects in the REE exam?
  1. 25%, 30% and 45%
  2. 30%, 25% and 45%
  3. 20%, 30% and 50%
  4. 25%, 35% and 40%

Answer: A, 25%, 30% and 45%. Section 19(b) lists the three groups with weights of 25% (Mathematics), 30% (Engineering Sciences and Allied Subjects) and 45% (Electrical Engineering Professional Subjects), totalling 100%. Source: RA 7920 (New Electrical Engineering Law), Sec. 19(b).

Questions and answers

What are the subjects in the Electrical Engineering Board Exam?

Three groups under RA 7920, Section 19: Mathematics (25%), Engineering Sciences and Allied Subjects, including RA 7920 and the Philippine Electrical Code (30%), and Electrical Engineering Professional Subjects (45%).

What is the passing score for the REE board exam?

A general weighted average of 70%, with no grade below 50% in any group of subjects (RA 7920, Section 19). Under Section 21, a candidate may retake only the groups graded below 50% and passes on averaging 70% in them.

Who can take the REE licensure exam?

Under RA 7920, Section 17, you must be a Filipino citizen at least 21 years old, of good reputation with high moral values, with no final conviction for an offence involving moral turpitude, and hold a BSEE degree from a recognised school.

How many examinees were successful in the latest REE exam?

In September 2026, 1,676 of 3,399 examinees were successful (49.31%). In April 2026, 3,769 of 6,556 were successful (57.49%), according to PRC results as reported.

What is the difference between an REE and a PEE?

A registered electrical engineer may take charge of the operation, maintenance, manufacture and repair of electrical equipment and systems. Only a professional electrical engineer may seal electrical plans. A PEE must be an REE with at least four years of active practice (RA 7920, Sections 16 and 31).

Are these real board exam questions?

No. They are original practice problems written and checked against RA 7920, the REE subject coverage and the Philippine Electrical Code. We are not affiliated with the PRC or the Board of Electrical Engineering.

How long do I have access?
