What is the AFPSAT?

The AFP Service Aptitude Test (AFPSAT) is the written entrance exam used by the Armed Forces of the Philippines for applicants to the Philippine Army, the Philippine Navy and the Philippine Air Force. It checks general aptitude rather than military knowledge. Each service then has its own further screening, such as medical, physical and other tests.

The exam format

BodyArmed Forces of the Philippines
Used byPhilippine Army, Philippine Navy and Philippine Air Force
Number of itemsNot officially published
Cut-off scoreNot officially published
Schedules and requirementsSet by the AFP and its recruitment offices. Check afpsat.afp.mil.ph or your nearest recruitment office.

What the exam covers

The AFP does not publish an official breakdown. Reviewers commonly report these areas, which our questions cover:

  • Verbal: vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms and word analogies, plus reading comprehension.
  • Numerical: arithmetic, fractions, percentages, number series and word problems.
  • Logical and abstract reasoning: letter and number series, coding, odd one out, figure patterns and syllogisms.
  • Spatial and mechanical reasoning: cubes, rotation and reflection, gears, levers, pulleys and map scales.
  • General information: Philippine history and government, the AFP and its constitutional role, and stable national security topics such as UNCLOS maritime zones.

Free official resources, and what we add

The AFP publishes AFPSAT schedules and requirements through its recruitment channels, but no official practice test. Our 104 original questions cover the commonly reported aptitude areas. Every answer comes with an explanation, showing the working for maths and mechanics items and citing the Constitution, the law or the treaty for general information.

How to prepare

  1. Check the AFPSAT schedule and documents required with afpsat.afp.mil.ph or your nearest AFP recruitment office.
  2. Practise arithmetic by hand: fractions, percentages, speed, distance and time.
  3. Work through series and pattern items until you can spot the rule quickly.
  4. Learn the basics of gears, levers, pulleys and pressure for mechanical items.
  5. Review Article II, Section 3 and Article XVI of the Constitution on the AFP, plus key events in Philippine history.
  6. Take timed sets and review the explanation for every question you miss.

RESILIENT most nearly means:
  1. able to recover quickly from difficulty
  2. easily broken
  3. unwilling to change
  4. physically strong and able to lift heavy loads

Answer: A, able to recover quickly from difficulty. A resilient person or material bounces back after stress or hardship. Source: standard English usage.

Read the passage. During long marches, soldiers lose water through sweat even when they do not feel thirsty. Thirst is a late signal: by the time it appears, the body may already be mildly dehydrated. For this reason, units often set drinking schedules instead of waiting for troops to ask for water. Leaders also watch for early warning signs such as headache, dizziness and dark urine. What is the main idea of the passage?
  1. Soldiers should march only at night.
  2. Thirst comes late, so units plan when troops drink.
  3. Headaches are caused by heavy packs.
  4. Troops should drink only when thirsty.

Answer: B, Thirst comes late, so units plan when troops drink.. The passage explains that thirst is a late signal and that units therefore set drinking schedules. 'Drink only when thirsty' is exactly what it warns against. Source: reading comprehension (main idea).

What is 456 + 789?
  1. 1,245
  2. 1,235
  3. 1,145
  4. 1,345

Answer: A, 1,245. 456 + 789 = 1,245. (456 + 800 = 1,256; then subtract 11 = 1,245.) Source: basic operations (addition).
